The evening of this year’s BIPP NW Region Annual Awards proved once again to be a hugely successful and most enjoyable event, with a record number of entries from members across the board. Hosted again at the ever popular ‘Dukes 92’, a good turnout of the membership enjoyed the wining and dining of the superb venue, and cheered on as the winners received their well-deserved awards.

The much coveted ‘Photographer of the Year’ award, based on a points system rather than a single image went to portrait photographer Jo Rutherford who had consistently produced a set of superb portrait images. The Portrait Photographer of the year was also awarded to Jo Rutherford, the Commercial Photographer of the year was awarded to Architectural Photographer Charlie Coleman, and the ‘Wedding’ Photographer of the year was won by Ioan Said. We were very fortunate, through our valuable trade sponsorship connections, to have secured a number of interesting and worthwhile prizes awarded by the sponsors to the winners in most categories. There were also some new categories in 2017 such as street photography, interior architectural photography and ‘Advertising on Location’ to encourage members from other disciplines.

As a region, we rely on the sustained support of all our members and the Awards Night is our most prestigious and significant event. In order for the region to represent the interests of the membership, it is important that we continue to stage this event each year and we depend on our valued members to keep attending this great night out.

After Wednesday’s AMAZING talk by Jonathan and Sean our focus now turns to the ANNUAL AWARDS! The formula we’ve had in recent years has worked well so we’re returning to Dukes 92 in Manchester. Two major changes though:
MORE Categories and SPONSORS!

We’ve listened to some feedback and adjusted some commercial categories and we’ve added two totally BRAND NEW categories:
Landscape Photography  and Street Photography. Both open to non-members!

Pardon the radio silence since the AGM but the committee and myself have been busy working on getting an interesting and varied programme that will hopefully interest a wide variety of photographers, as discussed at the AGM. Won’t spill it all here, but we’ve been looking at providing evenings that will inform on all aspects of photography and are even in discussion with a photographer from the National Geographic Society!

Talking about the committee, I am very happy to welcome Phil Melia and Sara Porter on board. Phil, a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography, has been creating beautiful commercial, industrial and editorial images for over 25 years. While Sara brings experience in fine art and architectural photography. They acre both very active on social media and their vast and different experience is a welcome addition to the team.

Besides that we have been discussing with new sponsors for our awards evening and can confirm the first two: Floricolor and Pixelu.

I met the people behind Floricolor when I traveled to Portugal for the Fearless Photographers conference and was truly impressed with their product. Every year I look for great albums which help set us apart from the competition so I am pleased they have accepted to sponsor us, providing prizes and helping making the award night even more special.

Pixellu, creators of Smart Albums are the second sponsor we can announce.  Since using Smart Albums I’ve cut our album design time by 75%. Just think about that. Amazing software and glad they will be providing a prize as well as supporting the evening.
